Where Do Bumblebees Sleep at Night?

It's 8:30 PM EST, the bumblebees are getting tucked in for a good night's sleep.

Bumble under Feverfew

Bumbles under Fairy Roses

Bumbles under Beebalm

Where do bumblebees sleep at night?
Under the flowers in the moonlight.

Why are they so tired, why don't they play?
Because they've been gathering nectar all day.

When will they waken? I wish them to.
As soon as the sun brings the first morning dew.

Very nice. Do bumblebees sleep? I tried to google that and got some yes and some no. Interesting.

Jane, good question. It sure looks to me like they rest for the night. We have hundreds of bumblebees on the lavender right now during the day, in the evenings they go under the flowers and stop moving, like they are sleeping.

sigh - that was lovely.

at the risk of sounding ignorant...are bumblebees not a part of a large social network like honeybees? would they have a hive to go to and rest? though i suppose a hive would be quite busy. do all bees, bumble, carpenter, mason, etc, make some sort of honey? oh gosh, i guess i'd better get me to the library...

I am no bee expert by any means.....I was just inspired by what I saw this evening. Yes, bumbles are part of a social network and they have a hive. But, for some reason this evening I found many bees "resting" under the flowers. They were very calm and relaxed after a busy, busy day of gathering nectar from lavender. It really looked like they were sleeping, I found at least 10 of them under the flowers. I haven't seen them rest like this during the day, it could have been the cool temperature though. It's been cloudy and cool, the bees seem slower. I also need to do some more research.

You pose the most interesting questions!

These little guys do look a bit weary. I think you should tell them to curl up on top of the soft blossoms though.... hanging upside down is bad for their digestion :0)

Are you sure they are bumbles and not some creature from half way around the world? :)

Love that first one with the feverfew!
I found some a couple of days ago in the wild, I think I want to collect some for home.

Lovely, as always.
