Mystery Plant

Near Akron, Ohio there is the neatest houseplant shop called Glasshouse Works. They sell all kinds of interesting and rare plants. Sometimes when you get a plant from them there will be a volunteer plant sharing the pot with the one you bought. This gorgeous guy was a volunteer.....

Not too long ago we discovered that it grows plantlets right along the edge of the leaf.

I decided this would be a great lesson on propagtation, so we planted the plantlets in old yogurt cups. See the little roots?

The little plant grew....

And grew.......

And grew.......
Now we have many of these mystery plants to admire!

My mom saw the plant and called it an airplane plant...which she had as a child. I believe this is a great common name for the plant because the plantlets seem to end up everywhere, as if they flew to other pots! If anyone knows another name for this plant please let me know.

I had these as a child. We called it Mother of Millions. We did a lot of transplanting! The beginning of a love of gardening.

Mother of Millions makes sooooo much sense! I love it! Thanks for the info.

OO! I had one of those when I lived in Montana! It's called Mother of a Thousand Children. I used to give them as gifts! Enjoying your blog!

Great idea! I know we will have "a thousand" children...easily seeds itself!

We call it a Mother plant. I love the other variations of the Mother name, especially Mother of a Thousand Children.
